Internship Program for American Sign Language Interpreters

Requirements: Although anyone may apply, priority consideration will be given to students enrolled in an Interpreter Training Program fieldwork or practicum class.

Location: San Diego

Compensation:

Phase I:

20 hours of observation of qualified interpreters and/or supervised teaming with qualified interpreters.
These 20 hours are to be completed with no monetary compensation.
After the 20 hours of observation, the intern will be evaluated in order to advance to Phase II.
Meetings with the Coordinator to discuss observations and business practices as well as ethical issues.

Phase II:

30 hours of supervised teaming or assignments to be deemed appropriate.
Paid an hourly rate with a 2-hour minimum per job.
Meetings with the Coordinator to discuss assignments and work on Soft Skills to include conflict resolution, compensation negotiations, and other general business practices as well as ethical issues.

There are no application deadlines as the program runs continually. The approximate time to complete the Internship Program ranges from 3-6 months.

Internship Frequently Asked Questions

Application Process: You must fill out an internship application, submit two (2) letters of recommendation, a resume with cover letter, and a videotaped interpreting sample. The videotaped Interpreting sample should be at least 10 minutes each: ASL to English and English to ASL. Send these materials to:
